Honest Assessment

Is this the right method for your line?

We tell you when this method works — and when it does not. Not every line can be lined, and not every line should be. Here is the honest criteria.

When it works

  • The pipe has fully collapsed and cannot accept a liner
  • A severe belly needs the line re-graded — the pipe must be excavated and re-bedded at the correct slope
  • The line needs to be rerouted — moving the path to avoid a structure, utility, or easement
  • The existing pipe is an obsolete material (Orangeburg) and the entire run needs replacement
  • You are doing a major remodel or addition and the line needs to be moved anyway

When it doesn't

  • The line is cracked or root-invaded but structurally intact — CIPP lining is less disruptive and often less expensive
  • The damage is isolated to one section — a spot repair is sufficient
  • The only reason you are considering replacement is because one company told you to — get a second opinion first
How It Works

The technical process, explained

Excavate, remove, replace, backfill

Traditional replacement involves excavating a trench along the entire line length, removing the old pipe, installing new pipe (typically SDR-35 PVC or HDPE), bedding it in the correct material, backfilling, compacting, and restoring the surface. It is the most disruptive method but sometimes the only option.

Tucson caliche slows excavation

In Tucson, the excavation often hits caliche — cemented calcium carbonate hardpan that requires special equipment to break. This adds time and cost compared to excavation in softer soils. We factor this into the quote — you will not get a surprise upcharge when we hit caliche.

Restoration is part of the quote

A traditional replacement means restoring whatever was above the trench — concrete, pavers, asphalt, landscaping, irrigation. We include restoration in the written quote so you know the full cost, not just the plumbing. In Tucson, restoration costs often exceed the plumbing itself.

What's different about sewer line replacement here

Caliche excavation cost premium

Tucson's caliche is the single biggest factor that makes traditional replacement expensive here. Breaking through a caliche layer can require a jackhammer attachment on a mini-excavator, and it slows the job significantly. In some areas, the caliche is so dense that excavation costs are double what they would be in softer soil. This is why we always compare trenchless options first.

Historic district restrictions

In Armory Park, Barrio Historico, and other historic districts, excavation may require additional approvals and care for historic features. Trenchless methods avoid most of these restrictions. If replacement is necessary, we coordinate with the historic preservation office.

Paver and hardscape restoration

In Catalina Foothills and Oro Valley, homes often have expensive paver driveways, stamped concrete, and mature desert landscaping. A trench through these features means significant restoration costs. We include this in the quote — and we remind you that trenchless avoids it entirely.

FAQ

Questions about sewer line replacement

Traditional replacement in Tucson varies depending on line length, depth, soil, and restoration. Caliche excavation and hardscape restoration are the biggest cost drivers. Trenchless options are often less expensive when you factor in restoration.

If the pipe is collapsed, has a severe belly, or needs to be rerouted, replacement may be the only option. But if you were told you need a replacement by another company, get a second opinion — we often find that a liner or spot repair would solve the problem for less than a full replacement.

Yes. Restoration is included in the written quote — concrete, pavers, asphalt, landscaping, and irrigation. You know the full cost upfront, not just the plumbing.

If your line is a candidate for CIPP lining, we will tell you and show you the inspection. We do traditional replacement when trenchless is not viable — not as a default. If trenchless works for your line, we recommend it.
